<Cheonggyecheon Restoration Module 5>

Achievements. What happened after the restoration? The first one is environmental sustainability. As you see at the picture on the top, we have more fish, insects and birds in the area. The bottom picture shows the heat levels in the Cheonggyecheon area and the neighboring area.

The temperature difference was that Cheonggyecheon was cooler by about six degrees Celsius. Cheonggyecheon was cooler because of the ecological effects and the wind tunnel. The second thing was that we now had a new public space for people and their activities.

This was a new public place for anyone to use for their activities. Before the restoration, it wasn't a good place for people to come but nowadays we can see more vibrant cultural activities taking place. We have created a new public space, which is a very important thing in the 21st century.

The Cheonggyecheon trunk became one of the major trunks of the green network. So nowadays major attractions can be accessed by foot in the downtown area including the palaces, Namsan and many cultural areas. You can move from the palace to Namsan, or the palaces to other urban areas by foot or by bike. The statistics also confirm this pattern.

The picture above shows the increase in volume of pedestrians during weekdays. You can see the thick red lines indicating this. The most interesting result is the diagram on the bottom, which shows pedestrian traffic during Sunday. Before restoration, this area was not a place to visit during Sundays or holidays

but now you can see the thick red lines indicating the increase of visitors in Cheonggyecheon and its neighboring areas.  So this area has become a popular public space for leisure. In terms of urban regeneration, potential has been generated for this area through the process of restoration.

So the neighboring areas saw new activities, construction, business and residential areas, which were some of the goals of Cheonggyecheon restoration. A public restoration leads to an economic development in the neighboring areas. This graph shows the change after restoration.

Up until 2005, there is little construction and repair. But right after the restoration, there are lots of new activities such as new buildings, revitalizing and remodeling. This is some examples of new development along the Cheonggyecheon area. The graph on the upper right corner shows the change of land price before and after restoration.

The green bar shows before restoration. As the land parcel gets closer to the Cheonggyecheon area, the prices get lower. But the blue bar shows land prices after restoration where the land price is higher as the land is located closer to the Cheonggyecheon area. Now it is a popular destination.

This is the change in economic structure. Downtown area used to have many lots of small-scale manufacturing activities but different businesses began to take place in the area after the restoration. And also the change of population. The decrease in population has stopped and there is a slight increase nowadays, which is a big change.
