The Seoul Metropolitan Government (SMG) is planning to provide free bicycle and personal mobility (PM) safety training programs in a bid to boost public awareness on safe riding and create safer pedestrian environments.
The city has been providing numerous guides and training programs to citizens with an aim to promote safe riding for cyclists and PM riders. In order to fuel such efforts, the city is vowing to push forward with safety training programs this year again to prevent accidents amidst the surging number of PM ridership.
The programs will be conducted at riverside parks along the Hangang River and local traffic safety centers in each district until the end of November. The customized programs include safety training for general cyclists, cycling instructors, and bicycle maintenance.
In addition, the city is scheduled to conduct outreach training programs for elementary school students, senior citizens in nursing homes and elderly colleges with the added benefit of health management.
Launched in June 2021, the bicycle safety certification program will be prolonged until the end of this year, aimed at enhancing the efficiency of bicycle safety training. On the heels of skyrocketing bicycle ridership, the certification program, in particular, is being operated based on upbeat reactions and backings from citizens. Certified cyclists will be eligible to receive discount benefits for Ttareungi (Seoul public bike)—30% off for daily passes and 15% off for season passes.
As the first city in Korea, Seoul is set to conduct a pilot PM safety training program in an effort to reduce the number of traffic accidents,. There was no special training for PM, such as e-scooters, until now. Many people have raised voices for the need of relevant training. The city is now responding by educating PM riders on the fundamentals of safely riding PM as well as PM parking etiquettes.
Those who are interested in the training programs can register online via the Seoul Lifelong Learning website.
