South Korea's New President Sends Special Envoy to Meet Jokowi

Jakarta. South Korea's new president Moon Jae-in sent a special envoy to meet with Indonesian President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo at the Bogor Palace on Tuesday (23/05). During the visit, envoy Park Won-soon expressed his new government's commitment to increase cooperation with Indonesia, according to a press release issued by the Cabinet Secretariat.
Park is South Korea’s special envoy to the Association of Southeast Asian Nation (Asean). His visit to see Jokowi was part of a brief tour of Asean member countries.
During the meeting, Park delivered an official letter from newly-elected South Korean President Moon Jae-in.
Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi, who accompanied Jokowi during the meeting, said it reaffirmed South Korea’s commitment in investment, trade and economic cooperation with Indonesia, among other things.
"Park also said that President Moon wants to hold a bilateral meeting with President Jokowi on the sidelines of the G20 meeting in Germany in July," Retno said.
South Korean state news agency Yonhap reported that Moon appointed Park as one of his special envoys on Friday.
Park, who is also the mayor of Seoul, visited the Philippines on Sunday and will continue his trip to Vietnam after visiting Indonesia.
Yonhap reported Park considers the main purpose of his trip to Asean countries is to deliver the new government’s view that Asean will increasingly have more and more share in its diplomacy.
Retno said Park’s appointment showed the new South Korean government is more committed toward Asean.
Although Indonesia and South Korea have already established a strong bilateral cooperation, Retno said a renewal of commitment is required with the recent change in South Korea’s presidential administration.
