City officials, experts and representatives of international organizations gathered at the International Forum on Urban Policy for Sustainable Development Goals in downtown Seoul on Wednesday.
During a welcome speech, the mayor of Seoul laid out Seoul's vision for a resourceful city with low energy consumption.

"Seoul aims to achieve sustainable development through measures that cover energy, urban planning, air, transportation, resources and safety, by joining forces with the general public and the private sector."

According to various reports released by the city government since 2014, Seoul recycles around 70 percent of household waste,.. and reuses energy generated during heating and cooling processes.
The city treats waste water, and uses the remaining waste to fuel gas systems, while generating electricity through 10,000 solar power stations.
And it hopes to walk with partners from all across the globe towards achieving Sustainable Development Goals.

"This forum is very important because it brings together people from across Asia and the Pacific, this is a region that's going to help transform the world in the next 15 years. It's going to help us provide employment, education, health, sanitation, and transform cities which is where both the world economy and world society is."

On the first day of the forum, Seoul signed MOUs with Sri Lanka's capital Colombo and Indonesia's Bogor, as well as a joint communique with the UNDP, pledging to facilitate knowledge exchange and technical assistance.

"The forum continues through Friday, and participants will be seeking solutions for urban problems as well as ways to follow up. Foreign participants will also go on a field trip to see for themselves the systems Seoul has installed to improve transportation, the environment and water management. Oh Jung-hee, Arirang News."
