Pleasant pedestrian environment for good first impressions on tourists
- Improving the pedestrian environment of five downtown areas crowded with many pedestrian tourists as well as managing public facility design and bad odors
The Seoul Metropolitan Government (SMG) will create symbolic street forests at major urban sites that show the identity of Seoul to welcome tourists, giving them a good first impression when visiting Seoul.
Moreover, the city will intensively improve the pedestrian environment by widening sidewalks in five downtown areas where many walking tourists visit, including Seochon and Ikseon-dong, and by removing differences between the levels of pavement and trafficway. At the same time, the public facility design, such as construction site screens and public restrooms, which has determined the impression of city, will also be changed.
First of all, the city will strengthen its symbolism by creating green belts and sculptures along some main sites in Seoul from other cities, including Incheon and Gimpo, where airports are located.
Moreover, travel lounge spaces for travelers will be made in transportation hubs where tourists frequent. The travel lounges will be managed as spaces to provide various travel conveniences, such as currency exchange, device charging and luggage storage, and to support communication between travelers, beyond the simple function as information centers that give tourist information.
The city will also clear away obstacles in the way of smooth walking from five major areas within the four main sites from next year, which are crowded with walking tourists.
The city will improve 30 types of facilities, such as ventilation outlets and public phone booths, and make them into specialized streets by reflecting local characteristics, targeting Sejong Village Food Street in Seochon, Pocha Street in Ikseon-dong, Flower Market in Jongno-gu, DDP West Food Street, and the Sogong-ro area by Seoul City Hall, where walking environment is bad despite the high demand for walking tourism.
Lastly, the city will also manage bad odors that invisibly degrade the quality of tourism and life. The city will maintain a clean urban environment by next year by installing odor blockers, such as sewer pipes and street inlets in 75 major areas with large floating populations.
Seoul will improve the quality of tourism services and content as well as tourist facilities by utilizing its resources, such as the natural environment like the Hangang River and Bukhansan Mountain, and urban night views.
