The Seoul Metropolitan Government (SMG) announced that it is accepting online applications from young adults for the city-funded public transportation assistance program from Tue, Mar. 28 to Wed, May 31, 2023.

The city launched this public transportation assistance program last year as a mileage system that credits 20% of public transportation fares, aimed at helping young citizens aged 19 to 24 lessen their transportation expenses and bolster their financial and social independence.

During the first year of implementation in 2022, the city provided an annual average of KRW 74,000 (equivalent to approximately five monthly and sixty annual bus rides) to 136,028 young citizens out of the total 152,015 applicants.

This year, the city plans to invest KRW 15 billion and provide assistance to 150,000 qualifying applicants between the ages of 19 and 24. As a youth assistance program aimed at young adults, this public transportation assistance program is gaining greater popularity and is expected to gain even greater traction.

To be eligible for the program, applicants must be young adults between the ages of 19 and 24 residing in Seoul as of the date of application. Excluded are beneficiaries of similar programs, such as the SMG’s public transportation assistance for pregnant women and youth allowance as well as the MOEL’s national employment support.

Seoul will provide beneficiaries of the public transportation assistance program with 20% mileage points from their transportation card payments twice a year—in the first and second half (up to KRW 100,000 in a year).
