The Seoul Metropolitan Government (SMG) has prepared a permanent media art installation that illuminates with color and sound for the re-opening of the all-new Gwanghwamun Square (scheduled to open on Sat, Aug. 6).

The city installed a 4K high-resolution media art display on a large 106-square-meter (54 x 3.25 m) LED panel media wall at the entrance to Haechi Madang (in front of the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts). It also newly installed a cube-shaped media glass structure at the entrance of The Story of King Sejong exhibition space behind the statue of King Sejong as another media art exhibition space.

The first piece of media art to be displayed at the entrance to Haechi Madang is “Gwanghwa Hwacheop” by artists Lee Ye-seung and Hong Yu-ri, created under the theme of Hangeul’s roots: heaven, earth, and people.

The media wall will operate every day from 8 AM to 10 PM, featuring artworks that encompass the past, present and future of Gwanghwamun—its 600-year history from Joseon-era Yukjo Geori to present-day Gwanghwamun Square—as well as the citizens and natural landscape of Seoul.

The goal of this media art installation is not simply to feature artworks to be seen, but to facilitate civic engagement as interactive art in which visitors complete the work through their participation. Viewers can scan the QR code displayed on the screen with their smartphone, and upload their own artworks or photos to the media wall.

The cube-shaped media glass structure (4.8 x 3.35 m) installed in front of the entrance to The Story of King Sejong underground exhibition space behind the statue of King Sejong will also display various media artworks, such as the achievements of King Sejong and Admiral Yi Sun-sin as well as Hangeul-related content and creative works by up-and-coming artists, every day after sunset until 10 PM.

The newly renovated Gwanghwamun Square will re-open on Sat, Aug. 6 as a park-like square ensconced in nature as a place of rest and leisure after a year and nine months of construction work. Seoul will hold a commemorative re-opening event to celebrate the re-opening of Gwanghwamun Square with citizens at 7 PM on Sat, Aug. 6.
