The Seoul Metropolitan Government (SMG) is implementing smart safety technology at construction sites of public works projects (scale of at least KRW 30 billion) in its efforts to make Seoul a safe city.
This is a measure to prevent occupational accidents at construction sites by enhancing safety with smart safety technology that incorporates cutting-edge IT technology.
The city plans to implement four types of smart safety technology, including a remote inspection system and a proximity warning system for heavy equipment, as well as a dedicated mobile app and an integrated operational and management control system.
The remote inspection system can monitor construction sites through 360-degree video to warn workers of risk factors, and the proximity warning system for heavy equipment can warn operators of industrial vehicles, such as forklifts, that they are in close proximity to a pedestrian worker.
There is also an integrated operational and management control system can be used to monitor the location of workers in the vicinity of access points (AP), and a system that detects the concentration of oxygen and carbon monoxide at the construction site and displays such information on an electronic signboard.
The city will introduce such smart safety technology at 32 construction sites as part of its phase 1 implementation, and plans to apply at all construction sites after 2023 during its phase 2 implementation. Moreover, smart safety technology will be required to be reflected in the design plans of all construction sites currently in the works.
Seoul expects that its pilot implementation of smart safety technology will contribute to the enhanced supervision of occupational safety and health without any blind spot.
