The Seoul Metropolitan Government (SMG) announced the Seoul 2040 Comprehensive Waterworks Maintenance Plan on Tue, Apr. 5 to safeguard citizens’ access to drinking water amidst climate change.

This comprehensive plan is a statutory plan established every decade pursuant to Article 4 of the Water Supply and Waterworks Installation Act, and it will serve as the foremost basic plan for Seoul’s waterworks policy.

The city prepared this comprehensive plan to preemptively safeguard its waterworks infrastructure and reflect potential risk factors, considering the deterioration of water purification center facilities and degradation of water quality due to climate change, among other various water quality issues.

City officials met with an advisory group comprising 53 members, including experts in waterworks and related fields as well as civic organizations and formed a special task force (TF) to collect and reflect various opinions.

As a result, this comprehensive plan entails a vision of promoting the city’s high-quality and smart Arisu tap water brand that communicates with citizens through a supply plan that reflects the future trends of the city’s tap water demand. Seoul also plans to conduct systematic maintenance of its urban waterworks infrastructure and secure sustainable performance of its water purification centers as well as establish a multidimensional water supply system for its major water supply networks.

The SMG plans to materialize and implement the comprehensive plan in stages starting this year to actively prepare for future changes in the internal and external environments of the city’s production and supply of drinking water.

Seoul’s waterworks infrastructure will undergo a great transformation over the next two decades through preemptive preparation for climate change and waterworks facility maintenance using cutting-edge technology.
