Seoul Accelerates ‘Pedestrian-Friendly Streets Without Wires and Poles’ with Master Plan Update for Overhead Power Lines Undergrounding Project
- Seoul will underground 254 ㎞ power lines between 2020 and 2024, achieving 154% of the maintenance goal during the planning period
- With an underground rate of 62.2% (the highest nationwide), Seoul targets an additional 600 ㎞ by 2040 to reach 68%.
The Seoul Metropolitan Government (SMG) is set to update its Master Plan for the Overhead Power Lines Undergrounding Project, which aims to underground electric and telecommunication lines and utility poles. This initiative will create pedestrian-friendly streets free from obstructive wires and poles.
To move the project forward, the SMG will soon open a bid for the Master Plan Update for Overhead Power Lines Undergrounding Project. Seoul will decide on the project operator in December and update the plan by November next year.
The plan aims to overhaul 165km from 2020 to 2024. With the city’s active support, 154% of the goal has been achieved. Seoul plans to complete the undergrounding of 254 km of power lines by this year.
By the end of last year, the SMG had reached the nation’s highest underground rate at 62.2%. The city now aims to add another 600 ㎞ by 2040, with a target underground rate of 68%. The SMG will also update aging ground equipment along sidewalks to enhance a more pleasant walking environment.
