AI boosts digital crime video monitoring performance by 1,265%
- Seoul Digital Sex Crime Victim Support Center cracks down by monitoring more than 450,000 videos in just 7 months after using AI
- Video detection time reduced by 97.5% and doubled support for deletion; future improvements in accuracy and speed expected
The Seoul Metropolitan Government (SMG) achieved significant results in the prevention of digital sexual crimes and support for victims, monitoring a total of 457,440 videos in just seven months from Mar. 29 to Oct. 31, 2023 after introducing a 24-hour automated tracking and monitoring system utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) technology. The achievement represents a remarkable increase of 1,265% compared to when humans (deletion support staff) directly monitored 33,511 videos from Mar. 29 to Oct. 31, 2022.
This method also significantly reduced time spent on finding the original video of the sexual violence. While humans took two hours on average from typing a keyword to detecting the video, AI technology only required three minutes, drastically shortening the time by 97.5%.
With the absolute amount of monitorable videos sharply increasing and the detection time for harmful videos plummeting, the support for video deletion has doubled as well. The number of cases increased from 2,049 from Mar. 29 to Oct. 31, 2022 without AI to 4,141 from Mar. 29 to Oct. 31, 2023 with the technology, showing a 102% increase.
Since the AI deletion support program for digital sex crimes has been in use for the first time this year, the city anticipates further improvement in terms of accuracy and speed as the AI learning data accumulates.
Mayor Oh Se-hoon expressed, “Digital sex crimes, including the ‘Nth Room’ case, have had a significant impact on our society with indiscriminate crimes raising the anxiety of our citizens. The city is striving to create a safe city where anyone can live safely by responding to new crimes through cutting-edge technologies like AI deletion support for digital sex crimes and providing a one-stop solution that is more comprehensive from crime prevention to victim assistance.”
