The Seoul Metropolitan Government (SMG) announced that it is using 87,884 surveillance cameras located across the city to combat the recent rise in cases of drug trafficking in densely populated residential areas, afterschool academies, and nightlife districts.
Narcotics investigators from the Seoul Central District Prosecutor’s Office Narcotics Investigations Division directly conducted training sessions for CCTV Control Center personnel across 25 districts on May 31 so that they can thoroughly monitor drug trafficking using surveillance cameras.
Through this training, the city plans to expand the scope in area of surveillance by the CCTV Control Centers to monitor the inflow of drugs in real-time in densely populated areas and respond immediately to signs of suspected crime.
The city announced its drug control measures on Apr. 13 to pursue omnidirectional measures from control and prevention to treatment and rehabilitation policies, going beyond the existing surveillance and crackdown-oriented policies. This CCTV Control Center personnel training is one of the city’s measures to intensively promote surveillance on drug trafficking which has become increasingly more sophisticated. The city plans to actively conduct drug awareness campaigns and provide education to teenagers in the future.
