The Seoul Metropolitan Government (SMG) announced to launch its free museum admission program (starting Oct. 27) for special education students to assist and enhance their access to art and culture.

Initiated as part of the municipal policy to provide social support for the disadvantaged, the city is providing special education students with free admission to not only museums and galleries, but also other services such as assistants, guides, sign language interpreters and bus rides to enhance their access to the arts and culture.

The city held a preliminary open call to receive applications for participation from national, public and private museums and galleries that offer exhibitions and programs for the disabled. The city then matched the thirty museums and galleries that applied for participation with twenty-five special schools, including Seoul Kwangjin School and Seoul Dongchun School, which is expected to provide greater access and opportunities to more than 2,000 students and teachers by the end of this year.

Moreover, the city is also operating a “museum-on-wheels” outreach program for museums and galleries to directly visit schools for students with mobility impairments or restrictions.

Seoul announced that it will continue to implement more social policies to promote disadvantaged citizens’ access to the arts and culture.
