[Research] Seoul, A Journey through 2000 years of History published by The City History Compilation Committee of Seoul (2009)
Preface
Seoul, the capital of Korea, boasts a long history. As the prehistoric settlement site in Amsa-dong proves, Seoul is the place where our Neolithic ancestors lived from early on. During the Three Kingdoms period, it served as the center and capital of Baekje for over 500 years. The Goryeo Dynasty placed a high value on Seoul (Namgyeong) as one of its three administrative districts, along with Pyeongyang (Seogyeong) and Gyeongju (Donggyeong). The Joseon Dynasty that followed moved its capital to Seoul and prospered for over 500 years. Seoul continues to be the capital of Korea, perpetuating its history. Seoul: A Journey through 2000 Years of History is a book designed to provide foreign readers, as well as Seoulites, with a glimpse into the 2000-year history of Seoul. It describes Seoul in each historical period from ancient times to the present, based on various topics. The 600-Year History of Seoul published earlier by the City History Compilation Committee of Seoul was too extensive for lay readers. In this respect, Seoul: A Journey through 2000 Years of History is a welcome addition to the literature on the history of Seoul as it is concise and easy to understand. I hope that this publication will increase public interest in the history of Seoul. Many thanks go to the authors, editorial supervisors, researchers with the City History Compilation Committee of Seoul, and Seoul City staff.
