1,000th Public Daycare Center Opened in Seoul

Under the stewardship of Mayor Park Won-soon, the Seoul Metropolitan Government has been striving to increase the number of public daycare centers since 2012. As a result of these efforts, the number of daycares has increased from 658 at the end of 2011 to 844 by the end of 2014. In 2015 and 2016 (up to the end of April), 156 have been added to the list. Songjeong Haetsal Daycare Center was newly opened on May 9, becoming the 1,000th public daycare opened in Seoul.

According to the SMG, the adoption of a low-cost, high-efficiency model has contributed greatly to the increase in the number of public daycare centers in Seoul. The model refers to a method of using the land provided by private businesses, religious organizations, schools, and other organizations, as well as unused spaces attached to public buildings. Two hundred thirty (or 67%) of the newly opened centers in the period were opened using this method.

The percentage of public centers is now 15.5%, in comparison to 10.8% in 2011. The number of staff at public daycare centers has also increased by 53%, from 8,073 to 12,408 in the same period, resulting in the improvement of the service quality and an increase in the number of jobs.

Commenting on the increase in the number of public daycare centers in the city, Mayor Park Won-soon said, “I am happy to see the opening of the 1,000th public daycare center and hope that this will serve as an occasion for the determination for provision of high quality service for children. We at the SMG will see to it that parents can trust these facilities to care for their children as if they were their own family.”
