Cairo Governorate's policy to preserve Historical Cairo Area
- The Great Cairo is the beating heart of Egypt, and it is the country’s administrative capital. It contains Historic Cairo area which is the oldest part in Cairo city (the icon of the city).
- Historic Cairo was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1979 because of:
- Several of the great monuments of Cairo are incontestable masterpieces.
- Historic Cairo groups numerous streets and old dwellings, which be maintained in the heart of the traditional urban fabric, forms of human settlement which go back to the middle Ages.
- Problems facing the preservation of heritage buildings
- The inability of the tenants in these buildings to maintain or repair their houses.
- The continuing of residents desire to make adjustments in the building.
- Use of heritage buildings in unsuitable activities.
- Lack of availability of funding to maintain the old heritage houses
- Supreme Council of Antiquities maintains the archeological buildings only and not the heritage building according to the Ministry of Culture Plans.

Policies for preservation: - UNESCO WHC-Urban Regeneration project for Historic Cairo
- In the framework of the programme "Management of World Heritage sites in Egypt", the Urban Regeneration of Historic Cairo Project has implemented a basic field study for the assessment of the urban heritage values of the urban fabric in Historic Cairo Area. UNESCO WHC with assistance from the URHC project team (Urban Regeneration Project for Historic Cairo) made detailed survey for the historic area in support of the Egyptian authorities to:
- Outline a conservation and rehabilitation strategy
- Establish a management system for the WH site with the contribution of all the concerned local administrations, based on a new and more effective institutional set-up and legal framework
- Launch public awareness raising initiatives to promote and disseminate information about Historic Cairo
